Environmental factors influence 80 percent of considerations when choosing funerals

It’s always great talking to people who want to make a positive impact on life. That’s why it was such a pleasure to talk with Simon Cox and Phil Bidwell from the www.funeralsolutionexpert.co.uk, both specialists in the funeral sector, and focussed on bringing good outcomes for consumers in the funeral industry and doing something positive for the environment. Simon and Phil have conducted an in depth research piece which we feel has highlighted that our commitment to our planet, and to our world community has to happen now. There’s no reason why the industry can’t change.

Lifelia is based on the premise that people should be able to be buried and cremated without harming the environment - their lasting impression on this world. And looking at the research Funeral Solutions Expert undertook, it’s absolutely clear that the trend now is towards being environmentally conscious. Here’s some highlights from this in depth research piece, for the full information take a look here.

Simon Cox comments “Nearly 80% of people said that environmental considerations would influence their choice of a funeral, while 4 in 10 (44%) also said they would prefer a funeral that had less impact on the environment. This feeling is strongest amongst Generation X (people aged between 39 and 54) and Baby Boomers (55-71). Least bothered are the silent generation (aged 72+) a rapidly reducing cohort and arguably their funerals are arranged by their children anyway.”

Some 50% of responses to their research, said they would prefer a coffin manufactured from materials that offer environmental benefits, 36% wanted equipment in the cremation process to make it less polluting, and 32% wanted electric hearses.

Groups have such as The Environmental Stewardship Group led by ICCM, FBCA, CDS Group and The Cremation Society have made steps to increase focus on the environmental impact of death and dying but as Simon points out: “It’s a very positive step, but whether the outcomes will be enough to placate consumers and the media – and most importantly help the environment – remains to be seen.”

However, we feel that there’s one thing for sure, change is afoot folks, and it needs to happen sooner rather than later.
